Short answer: a builder such as Wix or Squarespace, or an AI tool that drafts a site from a few answers, is a sensible choice for a simple site you run yourself on a small budget. A custom website is worth it when the site has to take local payments, load fast on phones, look like your brand rather than a template, or connect to other systems. Over three years, a builder plan usually costs less in cash than a custom site. What it costs you instead is control.
What builders do well
- Speed to launch. Pick a template, replace the text and photos, connect a domain. A simple site can be live in a day.
- No hosting to manage. The platform runs the servers, the security updates and the SSL certificate.
- Easy edits. You change text and photos by clicking on them.
- Low starting cost. Squarespace lists its Basic plan at 12 USD a month billed yearly. Wix lists its prices in US dollars for reference and says they vary by location, so check the price it shows you.
- AI drafts. Wix and Squarespace both offer AI tools that produce a first version of the pages and the text. It is a fast way to see a layout before you commit.
For a personal brand, a portfolio or a page for a one-off event, that can be all you need.
Where they fall short in Jordan
Payments
Builders take card payments only through the providers they support. Stripe, which many builders rely on, does not list Jordan as a supported country. Wix connects you to the providers available in your region and shows them in your dashboard, and only its Core plan and above accept payments. Cash on delivery and couriers
Wix lets you record manual payments such as cash. Delivery fees that change by area inside Amman and in the governorates, and links to local delivery companies, are harder. On a builder they often mean manual work on every order.
Arabic layout
Right-to-left support varies by template and by platform. Menus, galleries and forms are where problems usually show. Test the Arabic version of a template on a phone before you build on it.
Speed and control
The builder decides how pages load. You can compress images and remove sections, but you cannot change the code underneath. If the pages are slow on a phone, there is a limit to what you can fix.
Leaving later
Wix says a Wix site must run on Wix's servers and cannot be moved to another host. You can take your domain and copy your content, but the site itself is rebuilt elsewhere. Plan for that if you expect to outgrow it.
AI text
AI builders write generic copy fast. The tool does not know your prices, your areas or what your customers ask on WhatsApp, and it can state things about your business that are not true. Treat it as a draft and rewrite every line that matters.
Local systems

Monthly cost over three years
Builder plans look cheap per month. Over three years the gap narrows, but it does not close for a small site. These figures use prices published on each site in October 2026, converted at 0.709 JOD to the dollar. Check the current prices before you decide.

So the fair answer: on cash alone, a builder wins for a small site. A custom site earns its price when the site brings in leads or sales and you need what builders do not give you. That means your own design, speed you can control, local payments and integrations, and a site you can move. You also get back the hours you would spend building and fixing it yourself.
The builder rows also leave out what is easy to forget: paid apps or add-ons billed monthly, the price of a higher plan once you need to take payments, and the transaction fee some plans add on each online sale. Squarespace, for example, lists a 2% online store transaction fee on its Basic plan. Add these before you compare.

When to move off a builder
- You run ads, and the landing pages load slowly on phones or turn few visitors into enquiries.
- You need card payments through a Jordanian gateway, or cash on delivery with delivery fees by area.
- You want a page ranking on Google for each service, and the builder limits the structure or the speed.
- You need forms that feed a CRM, a booking system or JoFotara invoices.
- Your site looks like everyone else's on the same template.
- You pay for several apps each month to do what one site could do.
